19 Deaths Now Linked To GM Ignition Defect

September 15, 2014 0 Comments

General Motors initially reported in the spring of 2014 that the faulty ignition switch in some of their vehicles had been linked to 13 deaths. On September 15, that number rose to 19 and gave rise to speculation of how high it might go.

It all started with an initial lawsuit against GM over the case of Brooke Melton, a 29-year old woman who was killed when her GM vehicle suddenly lost power and hit another car. The settlement of her case led to the discovery of the ignition switch problem and what has become a year of recalls. General Motors has recalled 13.8 million vehicles in 2014. The recalls aren’t all for the entire vehicle, but for parts of cars that could prove defective. Various reports have unveiled problems with handling safety at the “Old GM.” Those reports and others led to GM CEO, Marry Barra, testifying before a fiery group of congressional representatives.

A 325-page report by GM’s outside council showed questionable handling of the ignition recall. The most glaring concern in the document is the explanation that GM could have fixed the ignition switch recall for less than one dollar per vehicle. A history of poorly handled safety and PR concerns is what has led new General Motors CEO Mary Barra to declare the “new GM,” as one more conscious of safety and customer service. However, what does this matter to customers who are interested in buying a new GM? What kinds of questions will they have about recalls? How close are dealers to GM, recalls and safety information? Is that important or is it best just not to bring it up? How transparent and Proactive should dealerships be about the GM recall?
