Fraudster Busted When He Returns To Dealership In Stolen Car
A group of alleged scam artists hit a dealership with a wire scam worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. At one of the Landers Auto Group stores in Little Rock, Arkansas, an elaborate scheme led to the theft of four vehicles, with the overall theft including motorcycles and reaching nearly $300,000. KTVH reports Domonic Dieffenderfer is the suspect whom police believe is behind the fraud. As part of the scam, Dieffenderfer and potentially associates committed wire fraud as they were able to purchase and leave with four vehicles.
Police told the local news Dieffenderfer might have already committed a similar crime in Tennessee. Local police spokesman Ernest Hilgeman told KTVH, “Mr. Dieffenderfer apparently has, I think our detectives said, a warrant out of Tennessee for the exact same thing. It appears that he is into this business.”
This could easily be another story of a dealership theft that goes unsolved, however, one of the alleged accomplices actually returned to the dealership in one of the stolen vehicles. What happened next?
He returned to the scene of the crime. The alleged car thief was immediately arrested and charged with five counts of felony theft. All but one of the stolen vehicles has been recovered, however, Dieffenderfer is still on the run.
Have you heard of other incidents in which a criminal committed a crime at a dealership only to return to the store and be arrested for their crime? How large of a problem do you believe customer fraud presents to retail automotive?
