Cobra Car Jacked On Test Drive | DrivingSales News

Gun Pulled On Car Salesman During 1965 Shelby Cobra During Test Drive

June 8, 2015 0 Comments

A car salesman in Florida thought that he was taking a potential customer out for a test drive. What occurred, however, was much more dangerous. The customer pulled a gun on the car salesman while on the test drive and left the salesman in a random location before speeding off.

The story began at Bozard Ford in St. Augustine, Florida. A customer was interested in purchasing one of the most interesting Fords of all time, a 1965 Ford Shelby Cobra. It was most certainly a replica. The vehicle is valued by the dealer at $96,000. The customer wanted to take a test drive, however he had a strange request. Instead of simply taking it around the block to see just how hard the 427 engine pulls, he wanted to take it to show to someone else. He was reportedly looking for someone else’s opinion. The problem is, that person didn’t exist.

The salesman and customer, who has not yet been identified jumped into the big block 60’s dream machine and took what was certainly a torque filled test drive, however, that’s when the would-be customer pulled a handgun on the car salesman and demanded that he get out of the car. The salesman consented and was left on U.S 1 northbound near Sherry lane in St. Augustine. The would-be car shopper just took the car, however he didn’t rob the salesman, which means that after getting out of the car he easily called the St. Johns Country Florida sheriff’s department, likely from his cell phone. The vehicle, however, wasn’t sold on craigslist or shipped overseas, it was found around a mile from where it was stolen. The keys were still in the ignition and the vehicle was not damaged. The suspect, described as a while male in his 50s, bald with blue eyes, 6-feet tall and 240 pounds, is still at large.

We at DrivingSales News are certainly glad that this situation ended without anyone getting hurt. The question is, did the dealer take anything from the customer before the test drive to ID him? It doesn’t appear to be the case, as his identity is not known. Finally,  has there been any situation at your store in which you’ve had a customer get a test drive without taking any sort of personal info beforehand?
