Is Facebook Actually Going To Launch A ‘Dislike’ Button?

This week, Facebook users took to the social media site to react to the company’s move to test what appears to be a “dislike button,” and the idea may not prove to be as popular as Mark Zuckerberg had expected.

In a town hall-style question and answer session, Zuckerberg took questions from users about topics that ranged from virtual reality to his wife’s pregnancy. However, the detail that most people seemed to be fixated on was his announcement that the social media giant is working on adding a button other than “like.” Facebook users flooded Zuckerberg’s official Page with thousands of comments, mostly about the new button. Although there were certainly some who said that they will use Facebook more if the button gets introduced, many others suggested that it would lead to cyberbullying and increased negativity on the site.

“Please don’t put a dislike button. As much as there are times I would love it, I would much rather express my thoughts in words to be completely direct on my opinion,” wrote one Facebook user.

Zuckerberg explained that users have been asking for a dislike button for several years, though it may not necessarily be named “dislike” or be represented with a thumbs down. He also stated that the company was preparing to test a version of the button.

“You know, it took us a while to get here,” said Zuckerberg. “Because, you know, we didn’t want to just build a dislike button because we don’t want to turn Facebook into a forum where people are voting up or down on people’s posts. That doesn’t seem like the kind of community we want to create. You don’t want to go through the process of sharing some moment that’s important to you in your day and then have someone down vote it. That isn’t what we’re here to build in the world.”

The button’s aim, said Zuckerberg, would be to express empathy on posts that reference topics where “like” is not an appropriate response, such as the death of a pet or another unfortunate situation. Some Facebook users suggested that harassment on the site could be minimized by adding a “sympathy” button instead of a “dislike” button, or by at least allowing users to opt out of the “dislike” button on their posts.

How would the introduction of a dislike button affect auto dealerships?

Considering the fact a large majority of car buyers believe the car buying process is a hassle, the introduction of a dislike button could create a significant problem for some dealerships. The consumers of today expect a lot more control over their purchasing journey than the consumers of the past, and many industries are evolving to meet the growing expectations of the general population. However, many auto dealerships are falling behind other sectors in this respect, and the potential of a Facebook “dislike” button provides yet another reason for dealerships to improve their customer service to make a more positive impression on the car buying public.
