John Krafcik Leaves TrueCar For Google

September 14, 2015 0 Comments

Google has just taken another huge leap forward in their quest to put a self-driving car on the road. To reach their goal, Google has hired top automotive talent away from TrueCar. John Krafcik has left his position as president of TrueCar to become the CEO of the Google Self-Driving Car Project. This means Google’s autonomous vehicle experiment appears to be looking more like a business and TrueCar will lose their president and CEO by the end of this year.

We told you in April 2014 about the big news John Krafcik was moving on from Hyundai to TrueCar to serve as company president. Prior to leaving an automaker for TrueCar, Krafcif served as president and CEO of Hyundai North America for five years and two months. He also worked in product development at Ford for 14 years. The Stanford and MIT educated Krafcik now takes his talents to the Google Self-Driving Car Project.

In a statement Krafcik described his feelings about his new position in an emailed statement to Fortune. In a statement, Krafcik explained, “This is a great opportunity to help Google develop the enormous potential of self-driving cars. This technology can save thousands of lives, give millions of people greater mobility, and free us from a lot of the things we find frustrating about driving today. I can’t wait to get started.”

As we’ve told you previously Krafcik joins a team at Google that is heavily testing self-driving cars in California and Texas and wants to see them on the road for consumer use somewhere between 2017 and 2020.

What does Google bringing Krafcik on as their CEO of the self-driving car project mean for the future of automotive? The Silicon Valley search giant now as an auto industry veteran that can help them develop a prototype and perhaps launch a Google branded self-driving machine in the future. What impact would a Google branded car have on retail automotive?
