The LAPD is making a shift toward greener vehicles and that means trying out Tesla Motors. The Los Angeles Police Department announced they plan to lease 160 battery electric and 128 plug-in hybrid vehicles as part of a plan to save money and cut back on fossil fuels. The LAPD is also going to borrow a Tesla Model S P85D and BMW i3 in order to conduct research. The police organization wants to determine if either the Tesla Model S or BMW i3 could be used as part of their fleet in the future.

Los Angles Mayor Eric Garcetti spoke about the new initiative in a press release. In a statement, Garcetti said, “Today, we take another step toward becoming the most sustainable city in America. This year, Los Angeles will become home to the largest city-owned fleet of pure battery electric vehicles anywhere in the country, and we will save taxpayer dollars along the way.” The move toward a greener police fleet is expected to cut vehicle-operating costs by 41 percent.

The LAPD already has 67 electric vehicles in their motor pool, thus the addition of 288 more only adds to a growing green direction. According to the LA Times, the LAPD has over 9,000 sworn officers. If even a fraction of those officers have a patrol vehicle it means that it was likely purchased for the fleet and possibly repaired at a dealership. If the LAPD decides to outfit their police officers with a Tesla Model S, millions of dollars in future sales from local dealerships won’t occur. If the LAPD decides to move forward with Tesla vehicles in their fleet, other cities across the nation could also undertake a similar experiment. Do you think this police vehicle test in Los Angeles will end up impacting dealers all across the nation?
