Report: VW Knew About Software Problem | DrivingSales News

Report: Bosch Told VW About Emissions Software Issues in 2007

September 29, 2015 0 Comments

As VW does its best to move on from the diesel emissions crisis, the organization has vowed to change while their old CEO is under criminal investigation.

Martin Winterkorn, the now-former CEO of Volkswagen, is under investigation from German prosecutors. Those German authorities are trying to determine what role Winterkorn may have had in the VW software fiasco that ultimately served as the reason he no longer has his position at Volkswagen. At the same time, reports are surfing Volkswagen may have known about potential emissions software issues eight years ago.

According to German news outlet, Deutsche Welle, the investigation into Winterkorn is taking place at the prosecutor’s office in the city of Braunschweig. Deutsche Welle reported, “the investigation would focus on allegations of fraud in the sale of cars with manipulated emissions data. The aim of the investigation is to clarify the chain of responsibility.”

Also adding to the growing speculation into the VW crisis is news that Bosch tried to warn Volkwagen about software issues back in 2007. According to Road&Track, Bosch created software for VW that could detect an emissions test in progress. Bosch reportedly warned VW that usage of such software in production vehicles could be illegal. Reports are also coming out that engineers for VW tried to tell higher-ups about a potential software issue and were ignored.

Automotive News reported back in 2005, VW staff informed upper management that in order to meet U.S emissions standards, a $335 Ad Blue Urea exhaust treatment system would be needed for diesel engines under development. The report indicates that upper management said no to the treatment and VW proceeded with producing an engine that wouldn’t meet emissions standards and had the illegal software to help it pass emissions testing.

If VW knew about potentially illegal software and engine trouble back in 2007, how would that change your opinion of the situation? Who is responsible for the problems with VW vehicles? Does the responsibility lie with specific managers and engineers or should the CEO take blame for problems at his company?
