Self-Driving Cars To Boost Economy By Billions?

December 1, 2014 0 Comments

Self-driving vehicle technology took center stage during much of 2014. From the small, cartoon-like vehicles engineered by Google to the lane assisting technology being creating by GM, this topic has consistently grabbed headlines. We reported previously that self-driving cars might be on the road by 2017. That was in reference to the small and possibly communal Google-created vehicles, however, that timeline isn’t in any way solid. Therein lies the main question surrounding self-driving vehicles: When will they actually hit the streets of your neighborhood? While that answer is aloof for the time being, a new study points to autonomous vehicle technology as being the source of billions of dollars of revenue in the next 15-20 years.

Ronald Berger, a global research firm has released a study, which indicates that self-driving vehicles will help add anywhere from $30 to $60 billion dollars to the world economy by 2030. Experts cited the creation and sale of cameras, sensors, communication systems and software as some of the products that will fuel the economic growth. Wolfgang Bernhart and Marc Winteroff, of Roland Berger, explained self-driving tech could be a game changer. In a statement Bernhart and Winteroff said, “Automatic (autonomous) driving will initially become established in a gradual process, but after 2030 it will bring a real revolution to the auto industry. So OEMs and suppliers should already be thinking about the role they want to occupy in this market of the future, and design their business model around that.” The Ronald Berger report also takes on the task of estimating just when self-driving vehicles will hit the roads. The estimates are that “highly automated” self-driving vehicles will hit the highways by 2020, city streets by 2025 and go “door-to-door” as fully automated by 2030.

How do self-driving cars impact dealers? For one thing, how much more will self-driving cars cost consumers in the future? Right now, Google tests Lexus SUVs that can be fully autonomous and the equipment needed to make it autonomous costs around $70,000. How much extra money would consumers pay for a fully autonomous vehicle? How different will retail automotive look in 2030 with more electric and self-driving options on the lot?
