Tesla Voluntarily Recalls 90,000 Model S Vehicles

Is it overkill or good business? Tesla has initiated a voluntary recall for all Model S vehicles. This recall stems from an incident involving an owner in Europe who, when turning in the driver’s seat to talk to a passenger in the rear seat, had the seatbelt detach. There was no injury involved to the driver. After inspection it was found that the cause of the seatbelt detaching was due to a faulty bolt. Tesla inspected roughly 3,000 additional Model S vehicles and could not find another instance of this. Despite that, Tesla chose to initiate a voluntary recall informing all owners of affected vehicles that they should schedule an appointment to have their vehicle inspected.

Many speculate that this recall would not have been ordered by the NHTSA, but Tesla has chosen to proceed regardless. Being the small fish in a big pond surrounded by large automakers that have experienced massive recalls in the past couple of years could certainly be a motivating factor. In a company statement, Tesla indicates that it is proceeding with “an abundance of caution” to reassure its loyal customers that their safety is first in mind. In the email notifying affected owners, Tesla states, “first and foremost, we care about your safety.” According to Tesla, the recall amounts to a single bolt that takes 6 minutes to replace.

In a time when automakers are battling negative PR due to massive recalls and emissions cheating scandals, its certainly logical Tesla wants to do everything within its power to avoid getting associated with any of that in the public’s eye. While this recall will certainly cost a substantial amount of money, Tesla is proactively protecting its reputation with consumers and prospective owners and this move has certainly garnered them excellent public relations exposure in the media due to this recall. Seeing as this originated from an isolated non-injury situation in a single vehicle and they could not identify another vehicle that was affected after examining over 3,000 of them, that $2 bolt could turn out to have resulted in some pretty valuable marketing.
