At the Wall Street Journal’s WSJD Live conference this week, Apple CEO Tim Cook gave the biggest hints yet that the company is working on its own car. Although he didn’t specifically mention the Apple Car, or its code name “Project Titan,” Cook did discuss the trends he’s witnessing in the auto industry, and certainly heavily hinted that Apple has intentions in the auto sector.

Although many auto industry experts predict that Apple’s rumored car won’t be driverless, Cook talked about the role that autonomous technology will play in the future. “When I look at the automobile, what I see is that software becomes an increasingly important part of the car of the future,” he explained. “You see that autonomous driving becomes much more important. And so a lot of the major technologies in the car shift. Electrification, etc. – they shift from today’s combustion engine-centric kind of focus. And so it would seem like there will be massive change in that industry, massive change.”

In the interview with Wall Street Journal editor Gerard Baker, Cook never actually mentioned Apple’s own role in the auto industry, but his comments may explain why the company has decided to get into the car market, if it indeed has. There’s no question that technology is playing a larger role in vehicles now than ever before, and with semi-autonomous and fully driverless systems on the way, the auto and tech industries are becoming increasingly intertwined in recent times.

When questioned, the Apple CEO refused to directly acknowledge the existence of Project Titan, saying only: “We look at a lot of things. Our model is to reduce that list to a few. We will see what we do in the future. I do think that industry is at an inflection point for massive change, not just an evolutionary change.”

The Apple CEO explained that the company’s short term goal is to give people “an iPhone experience in the car,” referring to the current CarPlay system, but it seems clear overall that he sees Apple’s role in the auto industry going in a much more ambitious direction in the long term.

Well, once again, the tech giant has avoided offering any specific information about its plans to enter into the auto industry, but Cook certainly is providing plenty of new statements to further the rumors and discussions about Apple’s secret development of its own car. Along with many recent hirings of engineers and other auto industry experts to its team, it seems increasingly likely that the company is going to release its own vehicle at some point in the future.

But when will that be, and what kind of car will the tech giant release? Let the predictions continue.
