Twitter Testing New Ads Button On User Profile Pages

In the latest push to monetize its service, Twitter is rolling out a new “Twitter Ads” button, which is now appearing prominently on user profile pages on both the iOS and Android apps. The new button could initially be mistaken as a shortcut to Twitter analytics, however, by clicking on the “Ads” button, users are offered the ability to manage their Twitter ad campaigns while on the go.

Busy car dealerships who are running ad campaigns on Twitter may appreciate the convenience of this new tool, although some Twitter users are already referring to the change as “desperate” or “ugly.” It’s difficult to argue with these sentiments, and for those users who aren’t currently running a Twitter ad campaign, the feature does nothing more than let them know that this button serves as a place where they can manage an ad campaign if they create one in the future. Surprisingly, the button doesn’t allow users to actually get started on building their first campaign from the app itself, although perhaps this functionality will be added at some point soon.

Earlier this year, Facebook launched a dedicated Facebook Ads Manager app that not only allows current advertisers to track the performance of their ad campaigns, but also brings the creation process itself to mobile. Users are able to write ad text, upload photos, and even target their desired audience all from the app. Twitter really isn’t in the position of needing a separate app for ad management at this point, but if the company is dedicating a significant portion of its user interface to Twitter Ads to increase revenue, it may be sensible to allow users to create ad campaigns directly from the mobile app. We’ll see if the company adds this ability in the future.

Twitter hasn’t officially announced the addition, so what portion of its user base is currently seeing the new Ads button is unclear. However, both the iOS and Android apps were recently updated on their respective app stores, and some reports indicate that the feature is currently being tested in beta.

The social media company’s latest addition isn’t the first time Twitter has tried to make Twitter Ads a more prominent part of the user experience. Recently, some users saw the feature included in the list that appears when you tap the Settings option. At that time, the option was showing up directly above the options for Lists, Drafts and Help.

Clearly, the company is still working out the details of how to display its new Twitter Ads button most effectively, to interest those who are running campaigns without annoying users who aren’t. It’s going to be interesting to see how the feature develops in the coming period.
