Yahoo Experiences Significant Growth From Firefox Partnership

December 4, 2014 0 Comments

Last month, Yahoo and Mozilla announced a “strategic five-year partnership that makes Yahoo the default search experience for Firefox in the United States on mobile and desktop.”

According to new data from analytics firm StatCounter, now that Yahoo has become the default search engine in the new Firefox 34, this position is paying significant dividends for the company with some industry experts suggesting that the Yahoo revolution has truly arrived.

Statcounter explained that as a result of the new default relationship with Firefox, Yahoo search share on the browser has grown remarkably from 9.6 percent to 29.4 percent, whereas Google usage in Firefox 34 has declined to just over 63 percent. Statcounter stated that “Yahoo search was used three times more on Firefox 34 than on Firefox 33.” Additionally, given that it’s new, the installed user base of Firefox 34 is still low. Firefox’s U.S. market share overall is approximately 15 percent.

The reported data makes it clear that these types of default search relationships continue to have a substantial effect on user behavior. If Firefox 34 experiences further adoption over the coming period, this relationship will mean millions of additional monthly queries for Yahoo.

For current Firefox users who upgrade to the new version, they will not automatically be switched to Yahoo as their default search engine but will instead see a pop-up window asking them to switch. It is up to the user whether or not they accept or decline this change. However, for all new Firefox downloads (i.e. not upgrades), users will see Yahoo as the default search engine.

In addition to this change, Mozilla has added a one-click search experience that allows users to choose from different search providers. Once a search is initiated in Firefox 34, users will see a grid of site icons at the bottom of a drop-down list from which they can choose the site that they want to use for their keyword search.

Recent reports from ComScore indicated the following U.S. search market share distribution: Google (67 percent), Bing (19.5 percent) and Yahoo (10.3 percent), while Statcounter reported Google at 78 percent, Bing at 12.4 percent and Yahoo at 7.9 percent. However, based on early developments from the Yahoo and Mozilla partnership, we could be on the cusp of the time that Yahoo takes center stage. We’ll be watching this closely as Firefox 34 downloads and upgrades continue.
