Is Apple Bringing Fighter Jet Technology To Car Windshields?

According to The Washington Post, one Apple analyst claims that it’s “very likely” that the company is working on a head-up display (HUD) for car windshields.

The tech analyst with Global Equities Research says that Apple may be working on a 27 to 50 inch head-up display, a technology most famously used by jet pilots that could project vivid icons and information for drivers while on the road.

The curved-glass screen could also be wired with sensors and “may be completely gesture-controlled,” a stealth project that analyst Trip Chowdhry said could be Apple’s “next generation” device, after the company’s other products such as the iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch.

However, Apple declined to comment on the story, and Chowdhry said a launch of the HUD “does not seem imminent.” He said that the glass and display technology could also be used in a completely different type of device, such as a TV, adding that the tech giant seems to be in the “early stage of something that could be a lot bigger.”

There’s no question that rumors about Apple’s secret projects have become commonplace amongst the many speculators in Silicon Valley, and Chowdhry has certainly sometimes been wrong about his predictions in the past. Even so, if Apple’s head-up display is truly being developed, it could mark a massive leap for the $660 billion company into an industry already crowded with big-money automakers and tech firms, and it would also further solidify the increasingly accepted idea that Apple is interested in entering into new territories in the world of automobiles.

Throughout all of the rumors, Apple has remained silent about any plans that it may have around cars, which Apple executive Jeff Williams once referred to as the “ultimate mobile device.” The Cupertino, California company’s only public foray into the auto sector to date has been its CarPlay infotainment system, which allows users to plug in their iPhones and use iOS-style menus to check maps, music libraries and more on their car’s dashboard display.

Head-up displays have rapidly turned into one of the modern tech industry’s most exciting concepts. Earlier this year, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, technology companies and auto giants predicted that head-up displays will be key upgrades one day. Some displays are already on the market, such as GPS maker Garmin’s $105 dashboard-mounted display that beams out directions. Another is Navdy, a San Francisco-based startup, with a $299 display that has been called “Google Glass for your car.” It’s a gesture-controlled, voice-activated projector that blasts out directions, texts, and Facebook and Twitter notifications at 40 times the brightness of an iPhone.

Other systems are being developed as well, such as a “360 Virtual Urban Windscreen” by Jaguar Land Rover that would highlight pedestrians, show points of interest and display a “ghost car” that drivers could follow for directions.

These developments are very exciting moves for the auto industry, and it’s expected that head-up displays will grow in popularity in the coming period, whether Apple is truly working on such technology or not.
