The increasing availability of internet-enabled infotainment systems in cars is an exciting development for consumers, but are these vehicles protected against invasion by hackers?

Technology pioneers in a multitude of industries are adding internet-enabled functionality to their products these days.  “Smart fridges” are now a reality, allowing users to access information via the internet.  In fact, many new products that are commonly found in homes are now available with internet-enabled functionality, such as Smart TVs, washers, dryers and grills.  While these products can provide consumers with a more robust experience, some experts are concerned that the security measures are not keeping up with what is required to keep your home free of invasion by increasingly sophisticated hackers.

Most people understand that their computers and smartphones can be vulnerable, and security measures are taken by both software companies and consumers to protect themselves against hackers.  However, many people don’t think of these newer “smart” products as having the same vulnerabilities, but the experts are telling us that it’s time to become more aware of this potential problem before it’s too late.

Now, how do these issues relate to new cars that include internet connectivity?  Security firm Harman has warned that this could become a serious problem when the car’s electronic control units, which contain the connected infotainment systems, are also connected to the engine and safety functions of the vehicle.  The potential for unauthorized access by hackers is something that must be addressed.  Software companies are currently working on solutions to this issue before it becomes a problem for consumers.

Sachin Lawande, from the Harman security company, explains how internet connectivity could make cars vulnerable to being compromised by hackers.  “Now that they are connected to the internet, their level of exposure is very different.  A cyber attacker can take control of critical vehicle functions, and unless we can make them secure, the increasing levels of connectivity are going to make it worse.”  However, Mr. Lawande continues by explaining that his company is currently developing a software barrier to protect these cars from invasion.  The new software is intended to prevent hackers from compromising the security of the car by stopping them from gaining access to the car’s engine or transmission.

Some people suggest that the increased vulnerability in new technology is partially due to the lack of understanding in consumers.  While many users understand that they must update security protection software on their home computers, they may not understand that there is a necessity for thorough security in new products as well, such as internet-enabled cars.

While the increased functionality that internet-enabled systems provide to consumers is remarkable, developers must be careful that security measures are kept at as high a level as they are in home computers and smartphones to ensure safety.  The industry expectation is that an increasingly large percentage of new cars will be internet-enabled over the coming years, while software and security companies are working diligently to provide solutions that will keep up with this ever-changing technology to ensure a safe and secure experience for all consumers.
