Google and LG have announced an agreement to enter into a 10-year patent cross-licensing deal that is expected to support new technologies for connected devices for homes, cars, manufacturing and more. While the financial details of the deal have not been disclosed, the companies outlined the agreement, explaining that it covers a range of products and technologies built on the two companies’ existing patents as well as patents that they will file over the next 10 years.

Automation is a hot topic in the automotive industry, and news of the Google and LG deal may be the latest step toward expanding such technologies in the manufacturing of cars.

“We’re pleased to enter into this agreement with a leading global technology company like LG,” said Allen Lo, Deputy General Counsel for patents at Google. “By working together on cross-licenses like this, companies can focus on bringing great products and services to consumers around the world.”

In July, LG partnered with Nest Labs, a Google company, to develop Internet-connected home appliances. LG has been working on energy-efficient products and technologies, some of which may find their way into the world of automobiles in the future.

“LG values its relationship with Google, and this agreement underscores both companies’ commitment to developing new products and technologies that enhance consumers’ lives,” explained J.H. Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of the LG Electronics Intellectual Property Center.

LG is an important partner for Google to have, as it manufacturers the company’s Nexus devices. Additionally, the rise of its own smartphones confirms its position as a key influencer in the world of Android. Many have stated that LG’s flagship G3 phone is one of the best Android phones that is available on the market, and it would appear to be a strong move for Google to be connected with all key Android partners. Earlier this year, Google signed a similar agreement with Samsung, the world’s largest smartphone company and the biggest Android manufacturer.

Considering the complex and costly legal battles between Apple and Samsung, the agreement between Google and LG should prevent any patent lawsuits between the two companies. This latest patent agreement builds upon the long-standing and strong alliance between Google and LG.

All of the reasons why the two companies have entered into this long-term agreement are not clear at this point, but an additional possibility is the simple idea of being able to utilize each other’s features without the need for complex licensing processes. In terms of the many possibilities for the combined development of exciting new technologies for consumers, we’ll be watching closely to see what happens over the coming period.
