Apple Secures Patent, Remote Start Coming?

October 23, 2014 0 Comments

Apple has a new patent that has some thinking that it will be creating a vehicle remote interface. The patent (number 8,868,254)Â was approved on October 21st. The title at the top of the patent is, “Accessory control with geo-fencing.” The patent describes a, “mobile device (that) can activate or de-activate vehicle features (e.g., door locking, vehicle defrosting).” This has led to speculation that Apple is working on an iOS platform device that could control anything from starting the vehicle to activating the alarm. This new technology would likely build upon Apple’s current in-car technology: Carplay.

Carplay, an in-car projected interface, originates on an iPhone and connects via lightning cord. Right now it’s used to call friends, use the GPS or adjust your music selection. The consensus, however, is this patent will lead to a more advanced offering from Apple. This could be anything from a slightly more advanced remote with startup and A/C control ability to advanced GPS vehicle monitoring capabilities. Right now, its all speculation based on an approved patent.

While nothing except the legal patent has been resolved, there is competition in the vehicle remote space. The OnStar system available in select GM vehicles, already allows individuals to start their vehicle, lock or unlock the doors and monitor vehicle fuel and oil information using their smart device. While Apple may be making headlines with this patent, OnStar is already achieving some of the functions that the new product may have.

How could the creation of Apple’s multi-function remote system impact the automotive retail industry? How will dealerships be impacted as vehicles become more and more app-centric?
