General Motors is taking steps to advance their in-car technology. Those steps include more connectivity with 4G LTE networks in select vehicles as well as the integration of Apple’s CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto. For the upcoming model year, 14 more vehicles will have the platform necessary for a smartphone based infotainment system.

According to a GM North America press release, Chevrolet will be offering Android Auto and Carplay in more models than any other automaker. In that press release, Mary Barra, CEO of GM said,” “For most of us, our smartphones are essential. Partnering with Apple and Google to offer CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility across the widest range of models in the industry is a great example of how Chevrolet continues to democratize technology that’s important to our customers.”

Chevy offers the platform for Android Auto and Carplay by means of the MyLink infotainment setup. This system is a seven or eight inch touch screen in the vehicle dashboard that allows users to connect their smartphone and truly plug into their automobile. Among the models carrying CarPlay and Android Auto in 2016 are the Chevy Spark, Cruze, Camaro, Malibu and Silverado.

Many have lauded the expansion of infotainment systems however; safety advocates fear it just adds more distractions to drivers. David Teather, Senior Director at the Nonprofit National Safety Council told CNNMoney that this ramp up of infotainment innovation could backfire.

In that interview, Teather said, “We’re very, very concerned about it. The auto industry and the consumer electronics industry are really in an arms race to see how we can enable drivers to do stuff other than driving.”

For dealers, advancements in vehicle technology means more features to market to potential car shoppers. However, in the age of the informed consumer, some customers may show up at your store with an in-depth knowledge of how Android Auto or Carplay works. They may also want to know how it works. The question is how well does your staff know your cars? Do they know infotainment systems inside and out or do they run the risk of appearing unknowledgeable to consumers?
