The majority of recently released smart car add-ons rely on a car’s OBD port (on-board diagnostics), but the new version of an app called DroneMobile taps more directly into the vehicle to provide drivers with new levels of control.

The new version of Firstech’s DroneMobile app was recently showcased at CES, the annual consumer electronics and consumer technology tradeshow in Las Vegas. It was explained that when a $550 DroneMobile remote start module, telematics device and GPS unit is connected to a car’s computer, the app allows drivers to remotely turn their car off and on simply with a swipe on their smartphone. In addition to allowing drivers to turn their engine on and off, the DroneMobile app allows them to remotely control the car’s windows as well as to lock or unlock the trunk. According to Firstech, DroneMobile is compatible with all cars, including imports, luxury vehicles and hybrids.

“DroneMobile gives you the peace of mind, convenience, and security of staying connected to your car,” writes the company on its product page. “Every system starts with the Drone module, which connects to a remote start or security system to give you unlimited access to your vehicle.”

Although the app itself is free, the service costs $49.99 per year or $119.99 for a premium version, while the first 90 days are free. The premium version includes GPS tracking to allow owners to keep track of their car in the event of theft or if someone else is driving their vehicle. Other noteworthy functions in the premium version include the ability to set up a wide range of notifications to keep track of your car, such as an alert when a specific routed destination is competed, as well as a “panic” mode that lets you remotely sound the car’s alarms if you need help or believe that someone is breaking into your car. A desktop version of the control panel is available, however, the notifications are said to be better suited to mobile device usage.

“We’ve completely revamped our control interface to make it easier to connect to your vehicle,” explains the company on the app’s Google Play page. “As you lock/start your car using DroneMobile, AVA 1.0, the Animated Vehicle Assistant, will animate and change states to show your vehicle’s status. Also, upload profile pictures to get the most customizable experience in the Connected Car Industry!”

The DroneMobile app is currently available for both Android and iOS.
