GM Confirms Production of 200-Mile $30k Electric Car

February 13, 2015 0 Comments

GM has confirmed the Chevy Bolt, an electric car with an estimated range of 200 miles, will be going into production. The vehicle could take the EV market by storm. One of the main features, which make this vehicle noteworthy, is its estimated price, which is about $30,000 after government rebates. The race to build the first higher range electric car for the masses seems to be led now by General Motors.

The Chevy Bolt could go into production as soon as 2017. That’s not based on any quotes, just speculation. For GM, the decision to go ahead and build the Bolt was as easy as listening to what they feel that people want. GM North America President, Alan Batey, told the L.A. Times, “The message from consumers … was clear and unequivocal: Build it. We are moving quickly because of its potential to completely shake up the status quo for electric vehicles.” GM is willing to put money into this “shake up.”

The Detroit-based automaker is setting aside a reported $200 million dollars to prepare its Orion plant and make new hardware for the EV. The faster that GM can produce their latest green vehicle offering, the better. What they have right now is the potential to be first to market in terms of mass-market electric car. Kevin Kelly, manager of GM’s electrification technology communications said that two things give the Bolt incredible potential. Kelly told the L.A. Times, “The No. 1 thing is price. The other thing is range anxiety. But when you start talking about a 200-mile electric vehicle, you take that topic off the table for a lot of people.”

GM is hoping to beat Tesla Motors to the punch. Tesla has already announced their Model III Sedan will have a range of over 200 miles and cost around $35,000, before government incentives. Tesla has to build a Gigafactory from scratch in order to get their Model III built; GM just has to modify their current set-up. Who will win the race? Do you think that GM will make a better EV than Tesla? Are EVs the future of automotive or just a current trend?
