Attempted Car Jacking At BMW Store Fails | DrivingSales News

Man Attempts Car Jacking At BMW Store, Meets Police K9 Unit

November 4, 2015 0 Comments

It was a wild series of events for a BMW store in California. It started with an attempted car jacking and ended the would-be car thief meeting a police dog.

A man tried to steal a vehicle from a BMW store and ended up in jail with a dog bite. The incident took place at around 12:30 p.m. on November 2 at BWW of El Cajon in El Cajon, California. A man walked on to the dealership lot and looked at a new BMW 3 series. Employees report being suspicious of the individual who got into the luxury auto while an employee was still inside and attempted to steal the car. The would-be car thief started up the vehicle and attempted to drive away, hitting several parked vehicles on the lot, including one that was sold, as he attempted to take the BMW with the employee still in the passenger seat.

Seeing the theft as a failure, the suspect took off on foot. Multiple dealership employees then chased the would-be car thief around a nearby neighborhood through back roads and alleyways. The attempted car thief then almost ran into Jake Leary, a retired police officer who was circling the block looking for him in his car. The would-be car thief asked if he could get into Learly’s car and get away. Learly obliged, and then held the man until police arrived, performing a sort of citizen’s arrest.

In the end, the man who attempted to steal the BMW would not get out of Leary’s car when the police came. The police sent in the K9 unit, which bit the man and quickly convinced him to exit the vehicle.

Have you ever heard of a similar situation happening at any other dealership? In the case of this store, dealership staff chased the would-be thief. When it comes to this type of emergency situation, what would you want your staff to do?
