Sources Reveal Google’s Plans To Build Android Directly Into Cars

According to Reuters, Google is following in the steps of Apple and Microsoft by laying the groundwork for a version of Android that would be built directly into cars. This move would mark a major advancement from Google’s current Android Auto software, which requires a phone to be plugged into a compatible car with a built-in screen in order to access streaming music, maps and other apps.

Although Google hasn’t provided any details, Reuters’ sources say the company plans to put Android Auto directly into cars when it rolls out the next version of its operating system, Android M, which is expected to be released approximately one year from now. With the operating system built directly into cars, drivers will be able to enjoy all of the benefits of the Internet without having to plug in their smartphones. At the same time, Google could potentially gain access to a massive amount of data that is generated by drivers.

Reuters’ sources cannot be identified because they are not authorized to publicly discuss the plans. Additional information will most likely be available once the new version of Google’s operating system is released. If this initiative proves to be successful, it could allow Google to compete in this realm against its rivals, such as Microsoft and Apple. Apple is currently leading the race with Apple CarPlay, while at this point, Microsoft has only revealed a concept infotainment system called “Windows in the Car.”

“It provides a much stronger foothold for Google to really be part of the vehicle rather than being an add-on,” noted Thilo Koslowski, Vice President and Automotive Practice Leader of industry research firm Gartner.

Many technology companies are competing to design products that are directly connected to the Internet, such as appliances, wristwatches and other gadgets. Considering the fact that the average American spends almost 50 minutes commuting in their car per day, tech companies are racing to take the lead in automobile internet connectivity in particular.

Google’s new software could potentially connect to other components of the car also, to allow for more sophisticated integration, such as having Google Maps be able to detect when the fuel is low and subsequently provide directions to the nearest gas station. The company could use the information that is gathered for advertising initiatives as well. “You can get access to GPS location, where you stop, where you travel everyday, your speed, your fuel level, where you stop for gas,” explained one of Reuters’ sources.

However, would automakers want to provide Google with access to in-car components that could create safety and liability concerns? There is also the potential that car manufacturers will be reluctant to give Google such a prime spot in their vehicles.

“Automakers want to keep their brand appeal and keep their differentiation,” said Mark Boyadjis, an analyst with industry research firm IHS Automotive. “Automakers don’t want to have a state of the industry where you get in any vehicle and it’s just the same experience wherever you go.”
