Trump Criticizes Ford For Mexico Plant

August 12, 2015 0 Comments

Donald Trump made headlines during a campaign stop in Michigan by criticizing Ford. The outspoken presidential candidate made the remarks while he was giving a speech at a Lincoln Day GOP Dinner in Birch Run, Michigan. Trump wasted no time in his speech getting right to his problems with Ford’s plant in Mexico.

During his speech Trump said, “Ford is building a $2.5 billion plant in Mexico. They’re building it in Mexico. So you say now, how is that good for us? So I said to myself, no good.” Trump went on to explain a story about how if he were president and Ford tried to build a factory in Mexico, he would stop it.

He told supporters he would get the factory moved to the United States, preferably Michigan. He also said he had an idea for Ford, ”I’ll actually give them a good idea. Why don’t we just let the illegals drive the cars and trucks right into our country?”

Trump certainly doesn’t shy away from inflammatory comments. However, with the presidential candidate taking aim at Ford, they responded. In a Bloomberg report, Kark Henkel, a Ford spokesman said, “We are committed to leveraging our global manufacturing footprint and will continue to invest where it makes the best sense for our business. We are proud that we have invested $6.2 billion in our U.S. plants since 2011 and hired nearly 25,000 U.S. employees.”

This wasn’t the first time Trump has been critical of Ford. In June of this year, Trump implied he was going to call Ford CEO Mark Fields and say, “Let me give you the bad news: every car, every truck and every part manufactured in this plant that comes across the border, we’re going to charge you a 35 percent tax – OK? – and that tax is going to be paid simultaneously with the transaction. They are going to take away thousands of jobs.”

It’s clear Ford is making an effort to invest in the United States, however, for Trump it’s not enough. Do you think Ford responded correctly to the criticism by Trump?
