Aviate is a mobile home screen application owned by Yahoo, which allows Android smartphone users to search for contacts or apps installed on their device, or search across the Web, without the need to open a browser.

Integration of functionality is a hot topic these days, and Yahoo’s development of a way to integrate its services more completely on mobile devices without dependence on operating system or browser defaults is a smart move. Aviate’s search results appear directly on the Android phone’s home screen, in a similar way to Google Inbox.

“Yahoo Aviate is the launcher that will take your phone to the next level,” reads the description on Google Play. “Gone are the days of a cluttered and boring stock Android phone. Yahoo Aviate automatically organizes your apps and shows you the information you need, at the moment it’s useful.”

Although Yahoo is not the default search engine on Android devices, by bundling a search feature with the Aviate app, users will be able to integrate its services. The app is able to deliver new content on the home screen throughout the day, such as displaying traffic conditions during a user’s morning commute and listing calendar appointments when a user is at work.

Yahoo’s description page for the Aviate app lists the following key features:

  • Simple, beautiful navigation Clutter-free, easy-to-navigate screens make every interaction faster and more efficient.
  • Smart See different apps based on your current context and time of day.
  • Gorgeous Choose from hundreds of unique wallpapers to make your phone a fashion statement.
  • Organized Apps get organized by function; you decide which ones you see.
  • Favorite People Swipe up instead of digging through your contacts.
  • Better everyday Your homescreen will look and feel very different, but stick with it for a few days and Aviate will feel like home in no time.

Additionally, the following is a list of what Yahoo considers to be “everyday uses” of its Aviate app:

  • In the morning, check how long you’ve slept, the weather, traffic conditions and news for the day.
  • On the move, swipe to see traffic to your next destination.
  • At work, see productivity apps, plus intelligent calendar features like one-tap dial-in to conference calls.
  • Headphones instantly pull up music apps and band/artist information.
  • Out and about, see photos, tips and reviews for places nearby.
