Hyperlapse: Instagram Makes iPhone Time-Lapse Videos Possible

On August 27^th, Instagram released a new app called “Hyperlase.” The 4-year-old social media organization has created an app that allows users to make stunning and seamless time-lapse videos using their iPhone. The result is remarkable, however how does this all work? How have they gotten rid of the shakiness of amateur video?

Hyperlapse was created an Alex Karpenko, an Engineer working at Instagram as part of his thesis last year at Stanford University. The system is geared around camera stabilization. Using an algorithm in conjunction with the built-in iPhone gyroscope, camera movement is instantly measured and stabilized. According to Mashable, “The algorithm works by sending samples from the gyroscope and frames captured into a stabilizer, which then outputs a new set of “correct” camera orientations. Those orientations are then sent to a stabilization filter, which puts out the steady frame.” The end result is the cure for the one of the ills of cell phone videos, their shaky and inconsistent makeup. This video shows the difference that this app can make verses a typical, less stable mobile video.
