Top Organic Results Earn 33% of the Clicks – Are You Missing Out?

June 26, 2013 0 Comments

#1. Getting to that spot in the organic search results is important, yet many dealers don’t fully grasp the importance of this spot. Sure, getting on the first page is good, but it could be a whole lot better if your dealership is sitting in that first position on top of Google’s results.

Keep in mind, we’re talking organic results – the listings in the middle of the page, not those pesky ads that populate the top and right hand side of the page. (We’ll talk about those in a follow-up post.)

So, why is being #1 in the organic result so important for your dealership? It’s been proven in numerous studies that the first result gets anywhere from 25-40%+ of the clicks. Here’s the results of a recent study showing that the first spot earned 33% of the clicks while the results for sitting in the second spot dropped off to only 18% – and as your placements falls, so does your potential click through rate. While you may be proud of that 10th position on page one, you’ll be lucky to get 2% of the clicks. And if you’re on page 2, you’ve got a lot of work to do.

What can you do to get things moving up?

Check your top keyword within your Google analytics reports. Find out what’s driving traffic to your site. If you’re getting traffic from long tail keywords that you haven’t optimized your pages for, then you have some opportunities for improvement. (If your top referring keywords are your brand, there are definitely more opportunities!)

Do some basic competitive research for the terms you find within your reporting and see who ranks higher than you for those same keyword phrases.

Then take those findings and work with your website provider to develop a plan to organize and edit your website content. Make sure your webpages are relevant to specific keywords and phrases.

Don’t miss out on an entirely new layer of qualified organic traffic by ignoring long tail keyword opportunities.
